Did you know that you can reduce your energy bill and carbon footprint by simply looking at how your home or office is lit?
Checking to see whether the lights are the most energy efficient could mean you can reduce your homes energy bills and your carbon footprint – thereby doing your small bit for the environment.
Typical lighting you may have now…
Low voltage halogens used in downlights.
These halogens are usually 35 watts but the transformers can have ‘gear loss’ of up to 20% so instead of producing the recommended 30W it is consuming 42W. The halogen downlights only have around a 2000 hour shelf life, which is about 1 year at 6 hours a day.
An important point to remember is that if they are not installed correctly, they are a fire hazard.
The running cost for 6 hours a day, 365 days a year at 23 cents per kWh is $19.39.
What’s the alternative?
LED stands for ‘Light Emitting Diode’, they are super energy efficient, using approximately 80% less energy than halogen or incandescent lighting which means significant savings on your power bills.
They use around 9 watts but give as much light as the old halogen lamps. The LEDs have a shelf life of up to 50,000 hours so around 25 years at 6 hours a day.
These fittings run cool so there is no fire risk.
At 23 cents per kWh, the running costs for 6 hours a day, 365 days a year is $4.76.
